  Eugene studied law and was admitted to the bar in January 1885. The following April he formed a partnership with Melville A. Sheldon of Glens Falls, NY, and practiced law under the firm name of Sheldon & Ashley until June 1888, when the firm of Sheldon, King & Ashley was formed. They continued the practice of law until January 1890, when Mr. Sheldon died, and King & Ashley was then formed.
