- Samuel graduated Dartmouth Col 1795; a prominent lawyer and civic leader in Amherst; state representative and senator for 12 years; a founder of Amherst Academy and Amherst Col. and treasurer of the college for many years. In 1833 removed to Cumberland, OH and became steward of Lane Sem., later was active in the founding of Western Reserve Univ. where he was also steward.
