  • Notes
    • Esther and Robert moved from OH to MN in 1859 and settled on a farm in section 21 in Castle Rock Twp., Dakota Co., MN. Esther died at the birth of her last child in 1862 and the baby was cared for by his grandfather and grandmother Day. Robert married again and moved his family to another farm near Cannon City, MN, here they lived for a few years before moving back to OH. Esther is buried in Castle Rock Valley Cemetery near Farmington, MN and Robert is buried at Burton, OH. They had four children. The youngest of which, Theodore Arthur Willard, became interested in electricity and invented the storage battery. His first factory was in Norwalk, OH. The batteries were used by Edison Phonograph Co. and Western Union Telegraph Co., in fire stations, in electric automobiles, for Pullman car lighting and finally for gasoline automobiles. His business grew and he moved to Cleveland, OH, where he built factories covering 16 acres. Batteries were turned out daily by the thousands and sent all over the world. He was also interested in photography and archaeology, especially the ruins in the Yucatan, Mexico, where he dug around the ruins of the old Mayan temples. He wrote several books about his work there. He also built a radio station, WTAM, in Cleveland, OH, the only one ever operated solely with a storage battery.
