Notes |
- On 27 Jul 1694, during the attack on Groton where most of her family were killed, Lydia was taken captive, along with brother John and sister Betty, and marched to Canada. Lydia was separated from her brother and taken to Ville Marie (Montreal), where she was offered for ransom to the French. Lydia's ransom was paid by Jacques LeBer, a distinguised, wealthy resident of Montreal, in whose household she was gently cared for and treated with kindness and consideration. On 24 Apr 1696 she was baptized into the Catholic faith and given the name Lydia Madeleine. On 19 Sep 1699 she took her final vows, and as Soeur Madeleine del la Congregation de Notre Dame, became the first girl of American birth to become a Roman Catholic nun.
